Coloring Contest

This contest offers primary school-age children in Kindergarten and Grades 1-3 an opportunity to present in an artistic manner, a message promoting abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs as well as abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Coloring sheets for 2017-18 are the same as last year, 2016-2017. All coloring sheets are printed on premium 70 lb text weight paper. Coloring sheets may be printed or copied locally, however, to be eligible for the National Contest, they must be reproduced on 70 lb white paper.

A set of all four (4) coloring sheets with permission to copy is $8.00. Order: ECS-00 from Signal Press.  Coloring sheets should be ordered before January 15 to allow contestants to meet the state and national contest deadlines:

Coloring sheets received by the National Education Director are the property of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and will not be returned. The WCTU cannot accept responsibility for materials lost in the mail.

A total of twelve prizes, ranging from $5 to $30 will be awarded at the national level (three in each division). State and local awards are given at the discretion of the sponsoring organizations.

Contest Deadlines:

  • State Contest – June 1st. State contests must be completed and winners chosen by this date. State Contest rules and judging criteria must comply with the National WCTU Contest rules and judging guidelines.
  • National Contest – The winning state contest competitor, or runner up if the winner is unable to attend, will compete in the National Contest which is held in conjunction with the annual Convention of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union. (The Convention location varies from year-to-year.)

With participants from kindergarten to college, WCTU Picture Coloring, Essay, Poster and Oratorical Contests have proven an effective way of engaging children and youth and educating them regarding the benefits of abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Essay Contest


WCTU Essay Contests offer students an opportunity to research and write on the subjects of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs with an emphasis on total abstinence as the preferred approach to these threats to youth.

Three Divisions are offered for the Essay Contests and the WCTU provides an information resource kit for each of these. The current topics are:

  • Division I – How Could Alcohol Hurt Your Family?    (200 – 300 words)     
  • Division II – What are the harmful effects of heroin use?     (300 – 500 words) 
  • Division III - Tobacco: Dangers and Damage    (600 – 1,000 words) 








A total of nine prizes, ranging from $55 to $125 will be awarded at the national level (three in each division). State and local awards are given at the discretion of the sponsoring organizations.

Poster Contest


 Poster Contests offer students an opportunity to research and present in an original artistic manner, a message on the subject of the inherent dangers of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs with an emphasis on total abstinence as the preferred approach to these threats to youth.

Winning designs are used to promote Youth Temperance Education Week in April of each year and serve as the basis for an 22 inch

X 14 inch poster which is also used as the front illustration for a half-page full-color bulletin insert with a distribution of about 50,000 annually.

Artwork received by the National Education Director, in whatever format, is the property of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and will not be returned. All contestants are urged to retain copies of their submissions. WCTU cannot accept responsibility for materials lost in the mail.

Color. Harmonious colors with strong contrast are encouraged

A total of twelve prizes, ranging from $35 to $100 will be awarded at the national level (three in each division). State and local awards are given at the discretion of the sponsoring organizations.

Oratorical Contests


The Woman's Christian Temperance Union believes that young people should be aware of the problems involved with the use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, illegal drugs and pornography. To encourage and promote research into the effects of these as they relate to the health and happiness of the individual, the protection of the home, safety, crime and violence, college students are invited to compete in the Intercollegiate Oratorical Contests sponsored by the WCTU on campuses around the nation.

Preliminary contests will be held with the location and dates of preliminary contests announced after consultation with participating educational institutions. Generally, preliminary contests will start about March 1st. Each participating state organization is free to set the time and duration of the state contest as long as all entries are completed and submitted no later than the contest deadlines below. Awards shall be given to first, second and third place contestants. Honorable Mention awards may be given at the judges' discretion.










The state winning entrant must send 5 copies of the speech, 1 copy of a biographical sketch, and a head-shot photograph by June 15 to:    Sarah Ward
