September 2008. A number of influential educators have joined in what they call the "Amethyst Initiative," to open discussions and
promote the lowering of the national drinking age to 18. The WCTU opposes this initiative which we believe would have many harmful effects.

Amethyst Initiative Receives 2008 Millstone Award
The WCTU created the Millstone Award to “bring awareness to a person,
organization or governmental body that creates conditions or uses
their position of
|
influence to promote unhealthy, illegal or immoral
behavior that we believe places children at risk,” according to Bunny
S. Galladora, one of three WCTU delegates who presented the award.

German Film Crew Visits WCTU Headquarters, Willard House
On October 27th a film crew from the Bitcom International visited the Willard House Museum and Francis Willard Memorial Library to film historical and background scenes for a 90-minute documentary by Valenthin Thurn about prohibition entitled The 18th Amendment. The film is scheduled for release in the spring/summer of 2009.
The crew, pictured above with Mary McWilliams, property manager and Janet Olson, chief archivist, spent the entire day with us. Note the "white gloves" treatment of valuable documents and antiques by Janet. We'll have more information as the production schedule becomes settled.
The 2012 National WCTU Contests were announced at the National Convention in August. We'll continue to sponsor contests for Picture Coloring, Essays, Original Poster Art and Intercollegiate Oratory during the year. Contest Rules and resource materials are now available for order from

The publication of the booklet, "WCTU Drinking Fountains," by Sarah F. Ward, thirteenth WCTU president, has sparked a new interest in
"discovering" and publicizing the many WCTU drinking fountains that still remain from the organization's efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to erect water fountains as an alternative to strong drink.
