ESSAY RULES, TOPICS, and RESOURCE MATERIAL FOR 2008

Purpose: To offer students an opportunity to investigate the subjects of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs with emphasis on total abstinence.

Sponsor: The Woman's Christian Temperance Union sponsors the contest and determines the awards.

Contest dates:
Local Contest - March 15th
is the deadline for entries to be postmarked.  ONLY if you are not being sponsored by a local WCTU, mail your entry to: Becky Stevens; 3500 Robin Drive; Kokomo, IN 46902. The essay will be considered for the National Contest. Essays sent to the national contest will not be returned; they become the property of the WCTU. The name of the winning contestants will be posted on the website by August 31, 2008.

Topics:

Division I (grades 4, 5, and 6)

[Length: 200 to 300 words]

Marijuana - Know the Facts

Division II (grades 7, 8, and 9)

 [Length: 350 to 400 words]

Tobacco Use - Not a Healthy Choice

Division III (grades 10, 11, and 12)

[Length: 600 to 1,000 words]

Don't Rationalize - Refuse Alcohol

Requirements:
     a. Each essay must adhere to the assigned topic.  Sources must be included at the end of the essay as a bibliography.  Mark all direct quotations, which should not exceed 20% of the entire essay length.
     b. Use 8 ½" x 11" white paper, on one side only.  Allow 1" margin and double space.  Essay may be handwritten in ink or computer generated.
     c. Three copies of each essay must be submitted for use by the judges.
     d. Each essay must include a cover sheet, attached to the front of the essay, with the student's name, age, grade, school, county, and teacher's name.  On the first page of the essay, in the upper right-hand corner, a word count must be given.  It should adhere within 25 words of the requirement.

Judges: A committee of three judges shall be appointed by the Education Director.  The decision of the judges is final.

Criteria for judging:
Style and persuasiveness       30%
Accuracy                             20%
Originality                              20%
Neatness                               10%
 Grammatical construction      20%
 (Spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, and paragraphing)
