MEDIA RELEASE
December 18, 1999
C. M. Newton, Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky, received the
prestigious "Annie Wittenmyer White Ribbon Award."
The National
Woman's Christian Temperance Union President Sarah F. Ward stated: "C. M. Newton chose to put the health and welfare of the students at UK ahead of the interests of the alcohol industry. Mr. Newton refused to allow the renewal of contracts with Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser), Miller Brewing, and Maker's Mark. This decision resulted in the loss of over $400,000 that UK was receiving in advertisement fees from the alcohol industry. However, as every mother knows, the life of her child is priceless."
In his effort to
protect the health and welfare of the students at UK Newton adopted a policy that eliminates advertising by beer, wine, and liquor companies on official UK outlets.
The Annie Wittenmyer Award was presented by National WCTU President Sarah F. Ward,
Kentucky President Rev. Henrietta Griffith, and Kentucky Vice President Nellie Buchanan. Click here for photo.
The award was presented in front of a "sell out" crowd at halftime during the
Kentucky vs. Louisville basketball game, played at UK's Rupp Arena.
